Increase the efficiency of your systems and optimise the open-loop control of your processes by installing modern, intelligent positioners and process controllers from Bürkert. The devices enable precise control of media and process parameters such as flow, pressure and temperature, ensuring that your system functions in a stable and reliable manner. With their high level of flexibility and precision, they play a key role in process control. Bürkert offers a wide portfolio of specialist solutions in this area that enable you to automate your processes and make them fit for the future.

What is the role of a process controller in process technology?

Process control valves are a key part of efficient process control. When choosing a suitable process control valve, it is important to carefully consider your system’s specific requirements. Positioners and process controllers are the key components that make the valve intelligent and maximise the performance of the armature.

What are positioners and process controllers?

What are positioners?

A positioner, also known as a position controller, is a key element in control valve automation. Its main role is to control the position of a valve on a continuous basis, e.g. “50% open”, and to transmit the current valve position. The positioner operates precisely and efficiently by continuously measuring the deviation between the actual and desired valve position and adjusting the control command accordingly.

What are process controllers?

Rather than monitoring and controlling the valve position, the process controller regulates the actual process variables, such as flow, temperature, pressure or fill level. The primary task of the process controller is to continuously compare the measured actual value of a process with the predefined set-point value and initiate control actions until the set-point value is reached – e.g. a “media temperature of 70 degrees”.

Different designs of positioners and process controllers

Bürkert’s ELEMENT and SideCONTROL series offer highly specialised yet flexible positioners and process controllers, designed to seamlessly adapt to different control valve types in the process industry. This enables standardisation, as valves from different manufacturers can all be automated uniformly using Bürkert’s solutions, making consistency possible in terms of electrical interfaces, device functionality and operating structure.

ELEMENT

The all-in-one solution for valve automation

The positioners and process controllers of the ELEMENT series are mounted directly on top of the valve actuator, creating a perfectly coordinated unit with Bürkert’s ELEMENT control valve series. They are also highly compatible with the control valves of other manufacturers.

Go to ELEMENT positioners and process controllers
Advantages of ELEMENT:

✓ Compact, robust, and proven reliable even under challenging conditions
✓ Ventilated spring chamber and integrated pilot air duct (no external tubing required)
✓ Hygienic and corrosion-resistant materials with high chemical resistance
✓ Wear-free thanks to contactless position measurement; water hammer resistant
✓ X.TUNE function for easy, automated commissioning

SideCONTROL

Flexibility and performance outside the valve

The positioners and process controllers of the SideCONTROL series are mostly mounted laterally on the actuator and are compatible with all common rotary and linear actuators that comply with NAMUR standards (according to IEC 60534-6-1 and VDI/VDE 3845 or IEC 60534-6-2). They are also suitable for Bürkert’s own Types 2301 and 2300 ELEMENT (actuator Ø 70/90/130/225 mm) in combination with the remote variant, as well as with a special adapter for Type 3277 Samson actuators (7.5 mm – 30 mm valve stroke).

Advantages of SideControl:

✓ Excellent control accuracy in highly dynamic environments
✓ Suitable for both single-acting and double-acting actuators
✓ Graphic display with user-friendly menu navigation
✓ IP65/IP67 degree of protection for harsh environments
✓ Remote version with externally connected position sensor
✓ Compatible with ELEMENT control valves even under challenging conditions (limited space, hard-to-reach positions or high ambient temperatures)

The role of digital communication in valve automation

Digital communication is a key factor in making information in valve automation and process engineering usable in practice. It allows both cyclic and acyclic data to be transmitted.

The use of digital communication solutions unlocks the full potential of modern, intelligent positioners and process controllers. Enhanced diagnostic capabilities significantly increase the efficiency, safety and availability of systems by, for example, enabling preventive maintenance measures.

Wide range of supported protocols

Our positioners and process controllers support a wide range of modern standards.

This means that they can be integrated seamlessly into existing systems.

IO-Link – digital communication up to the field level

IO-Link is a globally standardised communication system for connecting sensors, actuators and controllers to automation systems. The Bürkert positioners are available with IO-Link interface, port class A and B. Bidirectional communication enables centralised device access through the control level, providing not only process data but also diagnostics and service information.

The benefits to IO-Link users are:

✓ Extensive functionality for parameterisation and diagnostics
✓ Easy integration of field devices into the control level
✓ Quick device replacement during service and maintenance
✓ Simple commissioning and wiring
✓ Easy retrofitting of existing systems

Manufacturer-independent modernisation – Your advantages

Electropneumatic positioners like SideCONTROL or ELEMENT can be flexibly integrated into existing systems using a practical adapter. This solution allows for quick and straightforward adaptation to various actuators, thus simplifying the process of modernising existing systems.

Take advantage of flexible control technology that can be used in a wide range of processes, regardless of specific manufacturers. Such flexibility saves you time and resources in the process of integrating into your existing infrastructure.
